NLC Rejects 50% Telecom Tariff Hike, Plans Nationwide Protest

Jan 30, 2025

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has strongly condemned the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) decision to approve a 50% increase in telecommunications tariffs. The NLC described the hike as “too harsh for citizens” and an “insensitive, unjustifiable, and direct assault” on Nigerian workers and the general populace.

At an emergency meeting held on January 29, 2025, the NLC’s National Administrative Council (NAC) rejected the tariff hike and demanded its immediate suspension. The council also called on the Federal Government, NCC, and National Assembly to engage in dialogue with stakeholders to review the proposed tariff adjustment.

In protest of the hike, the NLC will embark on a nationwide mass rally on February 4, 2025. The rally aims to warn against imposing unfair increases on a struggling population earning a minimum wage of only N70,000.

The NLC has directed its affiliates and state councils to mobilize for the protest rally and has called on all Nigerian workers, the informal sector, and the general public to stand in solidarity against the policy. The congress warned that it will escalate its actions, including a possible nationwide boycott of telecommunication services, if its demands are not met.
