(Yenagoa) The Bayelsa state government said its carried out demolition of structures and properties along the Etegwe Market where mobile phone retailers were situated out of genuine concern to stamp out criminality, ease traffic among risk other factors and development.
This is coming on heels of complaints and criticism, particularly during this period of economic lockdown where people are grappling with difficulty due to Covid 19.
In a statement by the Bayelsa State Covid 19 Task Force in conjuction with the State Physical Planning and Development Board, State Environmental Sanitation Authority, accompanied by various Security agencies, the demolition was to paved way to ease traffic flow, improving hygiene conditions, exposing criminal hideaways and bringing orderliness to the environment .
”This exercise is coming after notices have been served to the owners and occupants of illegal structures to evacuate those premises as they contravene the development laws of the state.”
”Most of these structures were built along the natural drain and the improper disposal of waste have have obstructed the flow of water thereby, increasing the risk of flooding in the area.”
The Etegwe Roundabout area has been earmarked for a flyover to ease gridlock of motorists during rush hours by the previous administration but due to lack of will it failed to bring it to fruition but Governor Douye Diri promised to make a difference.
